Laparoscopy for Endometriosis

Laparoscopy is key hole surgery to look into the abdomen. Endometriosis can then be excised – or cut away – from surrounding tissues.

  • — significant period pain may be a symptom of endometriosis

    — other symptoms may include pain with intercourse and chronic pelvic pain

    — some women may have ultrasound features suggestive of endometriosis

  • — performed as day surgery under general anaesthetic

  • — simple pain relief such as Panadol and Nurofen to help manage pain
    — hormonal medication such as the oral contraceptive pill or Mirena to help manage pain

  • — abdominal pain usually improves each day
    — women often feel bloated and uncomfortable for 1-2 weeks post surgery
    — avoid strenuous activity such as gym work and heavy lifting for 4 weeks post surgery

  • — infection at port sites
    — scarring at surgical incision sites
    — small risk of damage to internal organs (bowel, bladder or ureter) that may require further procedures to repair
    — conversion to open surgery which may prolong hospital stay and recovery
